Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant: Unlike Anywhere Else in Mount Pleasant I've been selling homes in Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant for more than 26 years, and I think the reason I keep coming back to this little pocket of Mount Pleasant is pretty simple: it feels genuinely special. Steeped in history and character, with a walkable lifestyle, beautiful surroundings and a strong sense of community, it's a place that truly feels like home. There's the architecture, mature trees, water, porches and, of course, the location - just minutes from downtown Charleston and Sullivan's Island beach. But more than anything, Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant feel like real neighborhoods, not simply collections of houses. It's the kind of place where you can walk to get a cup of coffee, ride your golf cart to dinner, watch the sunset from the water and still be close to everything. What Is Everyday Life Like in Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant? Walkable is probably the first word that comes to mind. Community is a close second. Because the neighborhoods are so walkable, you tend to see the same people out and about - walking their dogs, grabbing coffee, riding bikes or heading to the park. You start to know your neighbors, and that sense of community is a big part of what makes this area special. In a part of the Lowcountry where getting in the car is often necessary for even the simplest errands, Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant are refreshingly different. You can walk, bike or hop on a golf cart and actually get where you're going. Pitt Street Pharmacy is a neighborhood institution, and Out of Hand is right there too. These are the kinds of local places where you can step back in time while running into someone you know. And then there's Shem Creek. A short golf-cart ride gets you to restaurants, boats, dolphins and some of the best sunsets around. Tavern and Table is a favorite, but some of my favorite Old Village evenings involve watching the dolphins and sunset from Red's Ice House, followed by Trash Can Nachos at Saltwater Cowboys. It's a pretty great way to spend a summer evening. There are also the quieter little details that make Old Mount Pleasant so special. The small library at 430 Whilden Street is tucked into the neighborhood and easy to miss if you don't know it's there. Grab a coffee at Brown Fox Coffee, take a walk over to Alhambra Hall and enjoy the views, then continue toward the Pitt Street Bridge for fishing, kayaking or simply watching the boats go by. And perhaps one of the best signs that you've found yourself in a special neighborhood? People actually use their front porches. Neighbors sit outside. Kids ride bikes. People stop to talk. It's a slower, more connected pace of life that has become increasingly hard to find. What Kind of Homes Can You Find in Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant? One of the things I love most about Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant is that the houses have personality. You'll find classic Lowcountry cottages, Craftsman bungalows, traditional Southern-style homes and beautifully renovated properties that combine modern conveniences with the character of an older home. Mature trees and landscaping are part of the charm, and many homes have generous lots by Mount Pleasant standards. The housing in Old Village is particularly varied. Some homes date back decades and have been carefully renovated, while others have been thoughtfully rebuilt or designed to complement the character of the neighborhood. In the broader Old Mount Pleasant area, you'll find an even wider range of homes, streets and architectural styles. Prices can vary dramatically depending on the size of the home, the quality of renovations, the street and, of course, proximity to the water. If you're trying to understand what your budget will buy in Old Village or Old Mount Pleasant, I always recommend looking at the individual sales rather than relying on a broad price range. Parks, Recreation and Getting Around Old Mount Pleasant One of the best things about Old Mount Pleasant is that you don't have to go far to enjoy the outdoors. Alhambra Hall and the Pitt Street Bridge provide beautiful waterfront access, while Shem Creek Park offers another great place to walk, enjoy the water and watch the boats. You're also just a short drive from Sullivan's Island and downtown Charleston. That's part of what makes the location so appealing: you can have a quiet, established neighborhood at home while still being close to just about everything you want to do. Whether you're in Old Village itself or another part of Old Mount Pleasant, the combination of water, recreation, restaurants and proximity to Charleston is a big part of the area's appeal. A Few of My Favorite Things to Do in Old Village Having moved to this community in 1994, I have plenty of favorite ways to spend time here. These are a few of the things I find myself doing again and again: Ice cream at Pitt Street Pharmacy - because some traditions are worth keeping. A sunrise run at Shem Creek Park - one of my favorite ways to start the day. Getting out on the water - there's just something about being on the harbor that never gets old. Taking my dogs to Pitt Street Bridge - beautiful views, fresh air and happy dogs. What's not to love? Cocktails at Red Drum - a favorite spot to catch up with friends and enjoy the neighborhood. A Brown Fox latte - because, let's be candid, coffee is part of the routine around here. Pickleball at Miriam Brown - you knew I was going to say that! 😉 And if I had to sum up Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant... It's not just the beautiful homes or the location. It's the little everyday things - grabbing coffee, seeing neighbors out walking, taking the dogs to the water, hopping on a golf cart for dinner, or squeezing in a game of pickleball. Those are the things that make a neighborhood feel like home. That's what I love about Old Village and Old Mount Pleasant. Is Old Village or Old Mount Pleasant Right for You?
